Hobart Institute Opens Learning Facility for Welding

Tuesday, December 20, 2016
The Hobart Institute of Welding Technology (HIWT) has opened the Next Generation Welder Learning Facility on its Troy, OH, campus. The new 16,000-plus-sq.-ft. building began hosting classes in late-October 2016 at the 13-acre campus that has trained more than 100,000 welders.

The new facility features three technically advanced classrooms that seat as many as 120 students, and contain high-tech audio-visual training aids. The facility also houses a dedicated nondestructive laboratory and classroom for hands-on liquid-penetrant and magnetic-particle inspection and training. Additionally, the facility boasts a large welder performance-qualification laboratory for destructive testing. The new facility will enhance the student learning experience for welder skill and technical training, as well as qualification testing and certification services.

“This expansion to our campus is an investment in its mission to serve our students and industry as HIWT is dedicated to welding training and education excellence,” says Scott Mazzulla, HIWT president and chief executive officer. “This new state-of-the-art building will educate next-generation welders and welding professionals. Big Servo Press on Way to Gestamp in Germany

Monday, December 19, 2016

Spanish press builder Arisa, a subsidiary of Nidec Minster Corp., is set to begin shipping what is reportedly the world’s most powerful servo press, featuring two slides with a combined stamping force of more than 5000 tons.

Multinational automotive stamper Gestamp Automacion will take delivery of the press at its Bielfeld, Germany, facility where it is anticipated that full scale production will begin in April of 2017.

With die space of more than nine square meters, the Arisa press for Gestamp is powered by six Siemens servo motors featuring a state-of-the-art energy management system. From the foundation to the crown, the 52-ft.-high press will require more than 40 truckloads to ship.

The press will feature an Arisa-designed transfer mechanism, allowing high-tensile material to travel through the die space at high production rates while maintaining precise part tolerances required by Gestamp. In addition, the Arisa turnkey system will include fully integrated controls, production software and automated quick die changing units.

Arisa’s large-capacity product offering continues to expand. In addition to the 5000-ton servo press, the company has received an order for a 4500-ton mechanical transfer press destined for a Michigan stamping plant, with an expected production startup of early-2018.

Based in Logroño, Spain, Arisa was acquired by Nidec Minster ( in 2015.
