NIMS Awarded DoL Apprenticeship Contract

The U.S. Department of Labor has awarded the National Institute for Metalworking Skills (NIMS) with a contract to serve as a National Industry Partner for Manufacturing with the goal of expanding and diversifying apprenticeships.

NIMS initially will receive $1.39 million to support the growth of apprenticeship programs in manufacturing; identify, develop and disseminate tools and strategies that increase access, entry and retention in apprenticeships for underrepresented populations; and assist employers in expanding apprenticeship programs, starting new programs and working together to create a pipeline of skilled workers. A significant portion of contract dollars will go through NIMS directly to companies to offset costs associated with building or enhancing apprenticeship programs.

The Precision Metalforming Association (PMA) and PMA’s Educational Foundation, in addition to The Association for Manufacturing Technology, National Tooling and Machining Association, Precision Machined Products Association, and Technology and Manufacturing Association have been identified as NIMS’ stakeholders that will be positively affected by the contract via the contribution of a new generation of skilled workers to the metalworking industries.
