The Advantages of Assessments

Accurate skill assessments help determine the strengths and weaknesses of new and current employees, and maximize a manufacturer’s ability to attract employees, reduce turnover and retain the right people. And, evaluating and assessing employees is vital to building an environment for success and maintaining high-performing teams. The Precision Metalforming Association’s (PMA’s) workforce-development team offers expertise and resources to help metal formers properly assess new and current employees.

Tools for Pre-Hires

In terms of pre-hires, “the true cost of hiring and onboarding metal forming employees often is underestimated,” says Connie King, PMA’s workforce-development director. “On average, it takes 33 days to fill an entry-level position in manufacturing, with a cost/hire averaging $5000. With high entry-level positions prone to churn, that’s a cost that few metal formers can handle repeatedly.”

Correctly administered, pre-hire assessments can identify candidates with the aptitude for industry skills and traits, thus minimizing turnover and protecting organizational culture. One powerful resource PMA members can utilize: the Occupational Aptitude and Knowledge Assessment (OAKA). This unique, industry-designed assessment is a predictor of an inexperienced applicant’s potential to learn the job and the applicant’s ability to function in today’s precision-manufacturing environment.

Available for purchase through METALFORM EDU for $25/person, the 60-min. assessment consists of 60 best-answer multiple-choice items. OAKA is intended for those entering into basic manufacturing training programs and apprenticeships, or applying for job vacancies as entry-level equipment operators, assemblers, fabricators, inspectors and technicians.

The assessment covers mechanical aptitude and spatial reasoning; mathematical reasoning and measurement; problem solving and related information; and industry understanding and behaviors. It’s a powerful data-driven tool to evaluate job applicants wishing to enter, transition or upskill into a career in metalworking.

“By identifying candidates with the potential to excel in metal forming roles,” King says, “OAKA helps prevent costly hiring mistakes and ensures the building of a workforce ready to thrive in precision manufacturing.”

Don’t just take PMA’s word for it … here’s what Larry Dickens, training manager for North American Stamping Group, has to say:

“Trying to choose between candidates for our apprenticeship programs has been a challenge. We have tried several tests and methods with varied results. In 2022 we started using PMA’s OAKA test as our initial screening method and it has been the simplest and best way that we have found to screen apprenticeship candidates.

“It  took only one class cycle to determine our scoring cutoff for candidates,” Dickens continues, “and now we see that students who test above this minimum thrive in the classroom and on the floor. I would recommend this assessment to anyone who trains or hires for the metal stamping industry.”

Testing to Increase Productivity and Teamwork

PMA also offers other personality and behavioral assessments proven to increase productivity and improve teamwork and communication in manufacturing environments. Programs such as DISC, CliftonStrengths and more are available in a consulting package for purchase by PMA members.

DISC (dominance, influence, steadiness and conscientiousness), an assessment-based learning experience, engages each participant in building  more effective relationships at work. It teaches people to understand themselves and others while learning to appreciate the different behavioral preferences and tendencies that each person brings to the workplace. Using personalized insights and actionable strategies, participants learn how to adapt to the style of others, ultimately improving engagement, collaboration and an organization’s overall culture.

CliftonStrengths, a performance-based assessment, helps individuals discover their top-five strengths, and proves useful for individuals to learn more about themselves while helping with an organization’s team building, according to the U.S. Department of Commerce. This assessment enables individuals and teams to understand, apply and integrate their strengths into their lives and respective roles at work, thus increasing their ability to perform with excellence. Team members who understand one another’s strengths have more insight into how their colleagues think and work. CliftonStrengths also can ease the efforts of managers in building teams of individuals with complementary skill sets. Employees who can use their strengths daily are more engaged and productive at work, thus improving the manufacturer as a whole.

“For incumbent-worker assessment,” King says, “partnering with an experienced, data-driven provider such as PMA allows users to bring in a non-biased third party that can assist in providing a fresh perspective, and improving program effectiveness and compliance.”
