Metal Service Center to Install Large Waterjet Cutter

Jacquet West, Carson, CA, a metal service center supplying stainless steel and nickel alloys, is installing a waterjet-cutting system from Jet Edge Inc. To be the second Jet Edge cutter at this location, the large-format mid-rail gantry system features a 12 by 21-ft. table, which enables Jacquet West to process 8 by 20-ft. or 10 by-20-ft. plates. Powered by a 60,000-psi 10-hp intensifier pump, the ball-screw driven waterjet system offers repeatability of +/- .001 in., and features dual independent cutting heads that can double production. The system also has submerged or above-water cutting capabilities as well as height-sensing capabilities to react to inconsistent plate height.

Promess Opens Support Center in North Carolina

Promess Inc., Brighton, MI, a developer, manufacturer and marketer of sensing devices, electronics, assembly presses and test systems, has opened an engineering and applications support center in Cornelius, NC, near Charlotte.
“This facility is strategically located to serve our growing customer base in the thriving aerospace and manufacturing communities of the Southeastern states,” says Glenn Nausley, Promess president.
Edward Stockline, an experienced application engineer, will manage the new center, according to Nausley.

Who is the Steel Man of the Year?

The Association of Steel Distributors (ASD) announced Michael G. Rippey, chairman of ArcelorMittal USA, Chicago, IL, as the 2014 recipient of its Steel Man of the Year award. The annual ASD award recognizes one individual who embodies leadership, dedication, service and excellence in the steel industry. Rippey will be officially recognized at a black-tie event during the 2015 ASD Spring Convention, April 23-25, in Indian Wells, CA.
Rippey leads ArcelorMittal USA’s flat-carbon operations, comprising 17 facilities in nine states and including mines, integrated steelmaking facilities and finishing mills capable of producing light flat-rolled and plate products. The company’s U.S. flat-carbon operations employs more than 16,000 people. Rippey has also served as president and chief executive officer of ArcelorMittal USA from 2006 to 2014.

He began his career with Inland Steel in 1984, and holds a bachelor’s degree in Marketing from Indiana University; a master’s degree in Banking and Finance from Loyola University, Chicago; and an MBA from the University of Chicago.

Rippey is active in the Chicagoland and Northwest Indiana communities, serving as a governing trustee for Children’s Home + Aid, and member of its finance and audit committee. Rippey also serves on the board of directors for the American Iron & Steel Institute in addition to serving as chairman of both the Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce and the National Association of Manufacturers. He also is a member of the dean’s council and an alumni fellow at Indiana University.
