European Steelmaker Working To Combine Steel and Aluminum for Possible Automotive Use

Wednesday, February 11, 2015
German steelmaker Voestalpine AG has been experimenting with a new technique to combine steel and aluminum, spurred by requests from automotive customers. The process, cold metal transfer, involves a special solder and torches that burn just hot enough to melt aluminum but not steel, with argon gas used to avoid oxidation. Then, according to a recent article in the Wall Street Journal, the steel is coated with zinc to bind the steel, solder and aluminum. Though as much as three times as expensive as current fusing processes, the company hopes to cut production costs to make the technology attractive to high-end automakers.
