Join MetalForming and PMA for four dates in April when eight different speakers, en Espanol, address issues aimed at helping metal stamping companies south of the border improve productivity and quality.

Now in its 11th consecutive year (the last six as a virtual webinar series), MetalForming magazine’s Mexico Stamping Technology Conference promises to deliver technical information that metal stamping professionals can take right into the shop, to drive gains in productivity and quality. This year’s edition takes place as a series of four 3-hr. online meetings.

The webinars kick off Tuesday, April 1, with a session on die-protection theory, presented by Enrique Rios, Mexico district manager for Wintriss Controls.

2025 Mexico Stamping Technology Webinar Series

Tuesday, April 1, 9-11:30 a.m. CT

  • Sensors for Die Protection
  • Servo Press Optimization

Thursday, April 3, 9-11:30 a.m. CT

  • Coil-Line Maintenance
  • Lubrication Best Practices

Tuesday, April 8, 9-11:30 a.m. CT

  • The Science of Stamping
  • Transfer-Die Design and Development

Thursday, April 10, 9-11:30 a.m. CT

  • The Basics of Tool-Steel and Die-Coating Selection
  • Press Maintenance

On the agenda:

  • How to properly select the ideal logic-sensor type (green, red, yellow) for any application
  • Die-protection tips without losing productivity
  • When to use electromechanical and electronic sensors
  • How to install sensors for optimum reliability and long life
  • A four-step failsafe process for locating misfeed sensors.

Following Rios, servo press scientist David Diaz Infante, from Nidec Minster, presents a talk on servo press optimization. Noting that a large number of servomechanical presses in the industry are underutilized, Infante will identify common bottlenecks and explore new strategies to maximize servo press efficiency. “Whether aiming to increase throughput, reduce setup times or enhance product quality,” Diaz says, “this presentation offers actionable insights tailored to boost manufacturing capabilities.”

Coil-Line Maintenance

… kicks off day two of the webinar series on April 3. Speaker Roberto Aguilar, from Coe Press Equipment Corp., will explore the benefits of preventive maintenance over reactive repairs. “Unscheduled breakdowns can disrupt operations, increase costs and compromise safety,” Aguilar says. “In contrast, preventive maintenance reduces unexpected failures, improves efficiency and ensures a safer work environment.”

The webinar will cover essential maintenance areas, including lubrication, power transmission, mechanical assembly and working surfaces. Aguilar also will highlight coil-reel and uncoiler maintenance, focusing on material tension control, brake performance and hydraulic-system upkeep. And, he’ll address electrical-system maintenance for preventing failures in motor connections, drive amplifiers and fluid-ingress points.

Wrapping up the April 3 session, we hear from Enrique Para from Unist, Inc., who presents Lubrication Best Practices. Para will explain the application of Industry 4.0 tenets of smart-manufacturing technology to press lubrication. “Using machine-to-machine communication and Internet of Things technology can help metal stampers analyze and diagnose lubrication-related issues out on the pressroom floor,” he says, “without human interaction.”

Springback Compensation, n-Value and More

The April 8 webinar track begins with a talk on Formability Science and Stamping Process Control, presented by Jaime Hernandez, director SW U.S. and Mexico operations with The Phoenix Group. “The stamping process is complex,” he says, “and to achieve process control we need to understand the inputs to predict the outputs. In this session we will review key mechanical properties of materials and how these properties can impact the outputs.”

Following Hernandez’s presentation is a session on transfer-die design and development, from consultant Miguel Mendez, a tooling specialist and consultant with Mendez Tooling Services. He will explain the importance of understanding the design intent of a part before starting the die-design process, taking into consideration the need to develop robust tooling in order to minimize the amount of tweaking and modifications needed during production. Up for discussion:

  • Transfer-die configuration
  • Die design and development steps
  • Basic transfer troubleshooting.

Day Four: Tool Steels and Die Coatings; Press Maintenance

Last but not least, join us April 10 for a talk on the basics of tool-steel and die-coating selection, presented by Eduardo Marquez, sales engineer, Wilson Tool Intl. Among the topics he’ll cover:

  • The properties of tool-grade steels and their significance in stamping-die applications, including analysis of the differences in steel grades that affect tooling performance and durability.
  • Classification of the various coatings used in stamping tools and their purpose, characteristics and advantages. “The discussion will cover how these treatments enhance wear resistance,” Marquez says, “reduce friction and extend the lifespan of components.”

And, we tackle the always popular topic of press maintenance. Bringing the webinar series to a close, Guillermo Vera, service manager of Komatsu Industries/Mexico, will present attendees with a detailed checklist for performing press maintenance. He’ll cover, among other topics:

  • How to measure parallels, perpendicularity and clearances in the gibs
  • How to inspect and maintain clutch and brake systems, and counterbalance and overload-protection systems
  • Maintenance of hydraulic and pneumatic equipment
  • Maintenance of automation and other peripheral equipment. MF
