Trumpf to Equip Laser Machines with AI to Gain Efficiencies

Trumpf has announced a partnership with machine-learning startup SiMa.ai to develop lasers equipped with artificial intelligence (AI) to optimize manufacturing. Through this partnership, Trumpf will equip several multi-axis laser systems—including those for welding, cutting and marking, as well for 3D metal printers—with AI via SiMa.ai’s chips. The technology is intended for more efficient laser applications to accelerate production, for example, of electric vehicles (EVs).
Over the next few years, Trumpf will use AI to enable real-time production of EV batteries with more precision and energy efficiency while eliminating scrap waste and lowering EV prices for consumers, according to company officials.
"AI has high strategic relevance for Trumpf,” says Richard Bannmüller, chief technology officer for Trumpf Laser Technology. “Our expertise in laser processes and manufacturing helps us to develop smart software for production purposes. SiMa.ai is the ideal partner for this next big step toward intelligent industrial solutions."
The AI chips will be integrated directly into laser systems, with the AI-optimized sensor technology monitoring the quality of the laser welding process in real time and evaluating more than 3000 images/sec. In EV production, for example, the real-time quality inspection during laser welding with the help of AI is expected to replace separate and complex testing procedures. This reportedly will help allow battery manufacturers to increase the quality of their production in real time and reduce reject rates.
