> MAPI Issues Quarterly U.S. Industrial Outlook
The Manufacturers Alliance for Productivity and Innovation (MAPI), Arlington, VA, has issued its latest report surveying the health of the domestic manufacturing sector, and reviewing the performance of specific, important subsectors. The report, posted to the MAPI website, includes a 5-min. video commentary from MAPI chief economist Dan Meckstroth.

Among the findings:

  • The manufacturing outlook calls for accelerated growth through 2014 and 2015.
  • Among the growth themes creating incentives for investment: expanding energy infrastructure, revival of the housing-industry supply chain, and strong demand for transportation equipment.
  • MAPI forecasts growth of 3.2 percent in 2014 and 4.0 percent in 2015.

Here’s the lengthy and data-filled report.

> The Fear of Liability Runs Rampant Through the Automotive Industry
While the pulse of the automotive industry remains strong and sure, fueling the growth of OEMs and their supporting tier suppliers, a potentially serious threat looms to the health of the supply chain: the 6-month-old GM recall scandal that has companies “feverishly working to correct potentially harmful language in documents, identify legal liabilities and prepare for the possibility of increased regulation.”

So goes a Crain’s Detroit Business article published online earlier this week. Describing the “new reality for automakers and the supply base,” the article states that “automotive manufacturers must—because they can't afford not to—protect themselves from liability in every aspect of production.”

The article offers plenty of good advice to suppliers—take a look.
