Additive-Manufacturing Training Center Coming to Kentucky

Monday, June 1, 2015

Underwriters Laboratories LLC (UL), a global safety science organization, and the University of Louisville, Louisville, KY, are set to launch the UL Additive Manufacturing Competency Center (UL AMCC), a 3D-printing training facility set to open in the fall of 2015 adjacent to the university campus.
Developed for established additive-manufacturing technical and business professionals, the training center is designed to be a hub for advancing manufacturing knowledge and workforce expertise. UL AMCC will offer hands-on training in additive manufacturing for metals and curriculum covering design setup, design corrections, machine setup, part production, post-processing and parts inspection, testing, and validation. The training reportedly will allow professionals to understand how to produce metal parts and emerging materials through additive manufacturing, establish safety systems, identify hazards from materials and machines, and manufacture parts with safety built into designs.

UL AMCC will join the university’s global advanced-manufacturing campus and the Institute for Product Realization (IPR), and collaborate and share knowledge with other corporate residents including General Electric and Local Motors’ FirstBuild.

“As an integral part of the IPR, the UL AMCC will provide engineers and manufacturers with a melting pot of valuable information and resources and provide a direct connection from our academic research and UL’s certification and safety expertise to practical 3D-printing applications,” says Neville Pinto, dean of the J.B. Speed School of Engineering and a professor of chemical engineering at the University of Louisville.

UL also announced that it will open a similar training center in Singapore.

Outokumpu Helps Develop Award-Winning Fuel Tank

Friday, May 29, 2015

A stainless-steel fuel tank co-developed by metal-sheet supplier Outokumpu received the New Applications Award from the International Stainless Steel Forum (ISSF) in the Best New Development Award category at the ISSF Annual Conference in Hong Kong, China.
Outokumpu, headquartered in Espoo, Finland, and the Swedish fuel-system company TechROi Fuel Systems partnered on the innovative tank, with stainless-steel properties that make it a competitive alternative to plastic tanks. Use of Outokumpu’s HyTens stainless-steel grade allowed thin walls and tailored strength, making the tank about 6 lb. lighter than a conventional plastic tank, thus reducing overall vehicle weight.
According to the ISSF, the winning concept provides a combination of good design, appropriate material selection, engineering expertise and sufficient delivery reliability. The stainless-steel provides superior crashworthiness and does not require surface treatment or maintenance, according to Outokumpu officials.
