Startup Custom Fab Shop Eyes Powder Coating as Fuel for Growth
From the San Antonio Express News comes this story of two recent retirees convinced by the local market for job-shop fabrication to un-retire and launch a startup contract fabrication firm, Burke (Michael) & Pruski (Jim) Metal Fabrication. It’s supplying parts for pest-control and soft-drink-dispensing machines, wildlife feeders and more.

Learn of its rapidly growing sales, spurring the need to double its square footage (to 25,000 sq. ft.) after one year in business. And, hear what the company’s founders say about the potential growth it sees by investing in powder-coat paint technology.

Metal Fabrication M&A Activity Deemed “Dormant”
Corporate Finance Associates and its Metal Fabrication Practice Group recently issued its fourth-quarter (2013) newsletter that summarizes third-quarter 2013 M&A activity in the metal-fabrication sector. The newsletter, available as a quickly downloaded two-page PDF, notes that “dormancy presided” over M&A activity in the sector.

Among announced or closed transactions was the acquisition of titanium-product fabricator Vulcanium, Inc. by United Performance Metals. Also noted: New orders for fabricated-metal products in the United States rose nearly nine percent in 2013 compared to the same period in 2012, and the market segment is forecast to grow at an annual compounded rate of four percent through 2017.
