World’s Largest Dump Truck Takes Top Honors
in High-Strength Steel Competition

The 2014 edition of the annual Swedish Steel Prize came to an exciting conclusion late in November, when earthmoving-equipment manufacturer Belaz claimed top honors for its use of high-strength steel in a new truck suspension and swivel carriage. Its new axle design solved a weight-distribution challenge that allowed the company to set a record for payload without negatively impacting fuel efficiency.

Competition sponsor and steel supplier SSAB details all four of the award finalists on a special website dedicated to the Swedish Steel Prize contest. In addition to Belaz, finalists were a Chilean cargo-trailer manufacturer, a Finnish manufacturer of forest harvesters, and a Brazilian fabricator of screening grids for large-scale mining.

“Metal-Shaped” Piece of Public Art Quite a Catch
metal fabricated bobberTo visitors of the Rotary Riverwalk Park in Des Moines, IA, the new fishing-themed metal sculpture there may not look like an impressive demonstration of metal-fabricating expertise. But to those who fabricated the sculpture at Iowa Metal Fabrication LLC, it’s a masterpiece that combines skill and knowhow.

Of particular interest, as described in a Des Moines Register article, is the metal-shaping process used to fabricate the 400-lb. bobber, shaped with custom-made metal hammers.

New Welding Process Combines Stir Welding with Ultrasonic Energy
Researchers at the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) have developed a solid-sate welding process combining stir welding with high-power ultrasonic energy. The benefits of the process, targeted at joining large pieces of high-strength metal alloys, include optimum weld properties and increased stir-welding tool life.

Learn all about the process by viewing an archived webinar originally presented on November 13, 2014, by MSFC welding engineer Jeff Ding.
