Schuler Nets Design Award
for Compact Crossbar Transfer Press

A new compact crossbar transfer press, available through Schuler Inc., Canton, MI, has earned the Global Innovation Award from Design News, a design-engineering publication. The award recently was presented to Hans Hofele, representing the automotive business unit of Schuler Presses, which developed the technology. The press features individual transfer drive units, which are mounted to the press uprights and transfer large sheetmetal parts from one press operation to the next. That allows modification of different press stations for various part complexities. “With older presses, you had to design the stamping operation to handle the most complicated part,” according to Hofele. “You couldn’t modify the press to run faster for less complex projects.” In addition to the press’ flexibility, removal of idle stations within the line has cut press-line length by about 20 feet. With the award, Schuler received $15,000, which was donated to Ohio State University. OSU and Schuler have maintained a long working relationship. Schuler officials say the company has received eight orders for the innovative press.
