Machinery Orders Slow in May but Preserve Year-Over-Year Gains
July 15, 2025Comments
New orders of metalworking machinery, measured by the U.S. Manufacturing Technology Orders Report published by AMT – The Association For Manufacturing Technology, declined 11.8% from April 2025, yet outpaced May 2024 by 2.7%. Machinery orders in 2025 placed through May were up 15% over the first five months of 2024; the number of units ordered was 4.7% above the first five months of 2024, the highest positive growth rate since 2021.
Among specific markets, engine, turbine, and power-transmission manufacturers made their largest investment in new metalworking machinery since February 2023, likely an extension of the outsized order activity trend in electrical-equipment manufacturing due to increased grid demands from data centers, the report notes. And, May 2025 machinery orders from the aerospace sector, which had the highest monthly order total on record in March 2023, fell to its typical monthly average but still is trending upward. Through May 2025, new factory orders for nondefense aircraft and parts climbed 164% compared to 2024.
