Labor Dept. Awards Grant
for Metalworking Apprenticeship Programs

Wednesday, June 4, 2003

The Precision Metalforming Association (PMA) has announced that the U.S. Dept. of Labor has awarded a $1.9-million grant to the National Institute of Metalworking Skills (NIMS) to modernize existing metalworking apprenticeship programs. Grant money will fund a new credentialing system for metalworking occupations, using industry proficiency standards established by NIMS. The grant will allow NIMS to develop curriculum guides for the four metalworking occupation areas: metalforming, machining, tool and die making, and machine building. Guides will address competencies required, standardized paths to progress within an occupational area and s to move across metalworking occupations.
