FABTECH 2014 Brings Top Manufacturing Leaders
from Around the Globe to Atlanta
More than 30,250 attendees from over 70 countries attended FABTECH 2014. During the three-day expo, attendees visited 1,477 exhibitors to see live equipment demonstrations—including hundreds of new technologies—and compare products side-by-side to find cost-saving solutions. The exhibits covered more than 550,000 net sq. ft. Attendees also benefited from the FABTECH educational conference that included expert-led sessions on some of the hottest topics in manufacturing.

FABTECH Kicked off with a Bang

Day one of FABTECH, November 11, opened with a keynote presentation by Cindi Marsilgio, Wal-Mart's VP for U.S. manufacturing. Discussing Wal-Mart's new manufacturing initiative, Marsilgio noted that the retailer has pledged to buy $250 billion of products made in the United States over 10 years, to encourage the creation of U.S. jobs.

In the afternoon, FABTECH hosted a panel discussion on "Bridging the Skills Gap with Veterans." Panelists acknowledged that in order for veterans to succeed in the manufacturing workforce, employers need to design training programs aimed at helping them translate their skills into the industry space. Additionally, the panel stressed that human-resource professionals must be trained to better understand the skills that veterans have to offer.

Vietnam Vet Opens Day Two

Day two of FABTECH began with a presentation by former NFL player and Vietnam War veteran Ricky Bleier. Bleier's presentation, "Be the Best You Can Be," drew parallels between his past challenges and the challengesthat business people face.

"If you think you are beaten, you are," Bleier told attendees. "The one who wins is the one who believes he can."

Next on the agenda was the always popular State of the Industry Executive Outlook. Panelists were Jody Fledderman, Precision Metalforming Association Chairman and president and CEO of Batesville Tool and Die; Todd Henry, operations manager, Caterpillar, Inc.; and Dave Whelan, Bluebird Corp. Each offered insights into several factors impacting the manufacturing sector.

Google on the Mind

Day three welcomed the much-anticipated presentation from Google for Work’s head of manufacturing, Mike Walton. His talk, "Transforming your Manufacturing Business for the Digital Age," included the announcement that PricewaterhouseCoopers had decided to "go Google." Attendees learned how Google will modernize PwC's technologies, and how it can do the same for manufacturers.
