In the early days of the commercial introduction of 3rd Gen advanced high-strength steels (AHSS), concerns with susceptibility to liquid metal embrittlement (LME) emerged as a primary inhibitor to the selection and use of these steels in automotive applications. In response, the Auto/Steel Partnership’s (A/SP) Joining Team developed a strategy to eliminate the potential of LME in the joining of 3rd Gen AHSS with emphasis on resistance spot welding.

A/SP has published an article to its website explaining for engineers and laboratory personnel the Gleeble and Rapid LME Laboratory Test Procedures, the background needed to understand their origin, a summary of lessons learned as well as their applicability.
