The Center for Additive Manufacturing at Auburn University, Alabama, is now home to a $1.5-million X-ray CT system for the nondestructive testing of 3D printed parts, essential to the university’s programs to produce “mission critical” parts for aerospace and aviation industries. The new system, acquired through a grant from the National Institute of Standards and Technology, includes a customized digital radiology vault from Pinnacle X-Ray Solutions that accommodates AM machines designed and built by Auburn researchers to fit within the X-ray vault. This enables Auburn engineers and their partners to conduct 3D non-destructive interrogation of mission-critical metal parts as well as provide real-time process monitoring of the AM process. As a result, researchers can confirm internal dimensions of structures and assess the quality of the finished part, as well as the manufacturing process itself.
