five-axis laser cutting as well as machining, turning and assembly, mainly within the automotive and aerospace industries. Continuously seeking technology to grow its customer base, the company recently purchased a Mitsubishi VZ1 five-axis laser-cutting machine with a pallet changer through Mitsubishi’s subsidiary, MC Machinery Systems Inc., Wood Dale, IL. The laser center, unique in North America according to MC Machinery Systems officials, has enabled Matrix to maximize processing time and increase capacity.

The new laser cutter brings new speed, accuracy and flexibility capabilities for a range of complex laser applications at Matrix. Cutting parameters measure 122 in. in the x axis, 87 in. in the y and 33 in. in the z. Integration of a pallet changer allows for jobs to be set up while the machine is processing its current job. Additionally, pallet changes only take 60 sec., optimizing cut time and giving Matrix more capacity to branch into new markets.

“Our goal is to remain cost effective for our customers while delivering the highest quality and quicker turnaround,” explains Ryan Willette, Matrix sales director, noting that the addition has helped Matrix meet increasing customer demands and provide the opportunity to expand its customer base into newer industries, particularly aerospace and defense. “With the increased range of cutting parameters, we now are able to process larger components without having to perform multiple setups.”
