EOS Adds Nickel Alloy, Ideal for Industrial AM Applications

EOS has expanded its additive manufacturing (AM) materials portfolio with the introduction of EOS NickelAlloy IN939, a new, high-temperature, crack-free material that provides industrial 3D-printing options for turbines and other energy-industry applications, according to EOS officials, who note that it was developed to meet or exceed the properties of casted nickel alloy.

The new powder material, EOS NickelAlloy IN939, a nickel-chromium alloy, reportedly provides an excellent balance of strength in high-temperature settings, resistance to corrosion and oxidation, fatigue performance and creep strength at temperatures to 850 C. It offers greater tensile properties, validation, reliability and crack-resistance than similar materials, according to company officials. Parts produced using the alloy also can be hardened after being manufactured by applying precipitation-hardening heat treatments.

For processing on the EOS M 290 metal-AM platform with a planned release for the EOS M 400-4 platform in 2021’s second quarter, these qualities are said to position the alloy for use in creating industrial gas turbines (vanes, blades, heatshields) as well as microturbines, turbochargers, power-industry parts and other energy-industry applications exposed to high temperatures and extreme elements.
