Manufacturing Barometer Shows Capital Spending on the Rise
The latest PwC US quarterly survey of large U.S. manufacturers reveals an uptick in planned use of cash positions to add personnel and secure technology. Some 77 percent of survey respondents foresee positive revenue growth during the next 12 months, with nine percent forecasting double-digit growth; none anticipate decreased revenues.

More than half (52 percent) expect to increase their new investments in capital equipment during the next 12 months, with the mean investment climbing to 5.7 percent of total sales compared to 5.4 percent for the previous quarter. The survey includes plenty more data, including a discussion of hiring trends and M & A activity.

> Laser-Assisted Process Could Solve Brittle-Material Machining Riddle
An article on the National Science Foundation website introduces the recently commercialized laser-assisted machining (LAM) process developed by scientists at Western Michigan University. The Micro-LAM process, which combines a focused laser beam and a high-pressure diamond cutter, is designed to address premature tool wear when machining hard, brittle materials. The laser heats and softens the workpiece material, allowing an increase in cutting speed while preserving cutter life. And, the developers report, the process yields smoother cut-edge surfaces to eliminate secondary finishing.

> How to Improve Spot-Welding Performance
Resistance spot welding is a popular value-added secondary operation for many metalformers, but the process often is ignored until quality problems arise. When a customer calls to report that all the parts you just produced have been rejected due to bad spot welds, suddenly the process takes on a whole new level of importance.
