LISTEN: Reinventing Industrial Hiring Strategies |
According
to the U.S. Department of Labor, apprenticeships have grown 56% since
2013 and are expected to continue to skyrocket in coming years. In this
episode of the Thomas Industry Update podcast, Thomas CMO Shawn
Fitzgerald sits down with Michael Bell, CEO and founder of Synbyo, and
Q3 Thomas Champion for Industry winner, to discuss his unique approach
to solving the industrial skills gap. After seeing how manufacturing
businesses have grown tired of poaching talent from each other, Bell
believes that his apprenticeship program, geared toward both young
novices and experienced industrial professionals, could offer a
long-term solution to the industrial skills gap. |

Don’t Miss the Virtual Metal Stamping and Tool & Die Conference, Including Lubrication Technology |
The 2021 Metal Stamping and Tool & Die Conference, including Lubrication Technology, is taking place virtually. For four afternoons across two weeks—January 26 and 28, and February 2 and 4—participants will receive the same content and learn from the same insightful industry leaders as had been scheduled for the in-person event. The conference, produced by PMA and MetalForming magazine, in
partnership with the Society of Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers,
will include presentations on virtual stamping, tool and die, and
lubrication technology, as well as inspiring keynotes. In addition, the
sessions that take place throughout the event will be available
on-demand following the conference. |

Using Simulation Software |
… to navigate the perfect storm of die development: increased part complexity, stronger steels and compressed customer timelines.
Facing the “perfect storm” of die design and development—dramatic increases in stamped-part complexity along with compressed customer timelines—led, in 2015, the management team at 3-Dimensional Services Group to invest in new simulation software. The company now regularly calls on the software to help manage blank development, evaluate stamped-part and process feasibility, and generate and simulate alternative die-face designs.
Drawing on Experience
Deep drawing is considered the most complex of all sheet metal forming processes. It presents many process variables, some interacting synergistically, that impact a stamper’s ability to produce defect-free parts repeatedly.
The
topic of deep drawing has been extensively researched and written
about. Much effort also has gone into developing predictive software to
assist with designing and troubleshooting draw dies. Still, I receive
more questions by far on deep drawing than on any other topic. This is
due in part to many small companies lacking access to forming-simulation
software and, therefore, needing to rely on rules-of-thumb and past
experiences. |
