Fractured Supply Chains Drive Steel Prices Skyward
Tony Krump, purchasing manager at Ajax Metal Forming Solutions, Minneapolis, MN, recently purchased galvanized sheet steel at twice last summer's price.  Even at that price, he was glad to get the shipment.  "It's never been like this, ever," he says.  "Every link in the supply chain has issues."

Ajax, like hundreds of U.S. manufacturers that buy steel by the ton, is stuck between erratic availability and escalating prices. Steel demand has raced well ahead of supply for the last six months with no immediate sign of slowing down.  Prices for hot- and cold-rolled steel, galvanized steel, and stainless steel are at all-time highs in the United States—and significantly higher than in other countries.

But it's not just the prices that concern Krump and other purchasing managers; it's the rate of increase that carries shock value.  Hot-rolled coil steel, considered a bellwether, checked in at $1370/ton in mid-April, more than triple the low of $440/ton just seven months ago.

MetalForming Provides Your Business Edge
In January of this year MetalForming launched a monthly enewsletter called MetalForming Business Edge, with fresh content targeted specifically to company executives. Every issue includes commentary from automotive-industry analyst Laurie Harbour, and links to current articles and blog posts on an array of business-management topics. Also featured: Q&A sessions with company owners and presidents, who share their “secrets to success.”

“I’m continually impressed with their decisiveness, boldness and their ability to engage and motivate their management teams,” says MetalForming magazine editorial director Brad Kuvin. “I’ve unearthed several nuggets of management gold during these interviews. For example, Jeff Aznavorian, president of metal former Clips & Clamps Industries, shared that he expects his company to ‘take more calculated risks. There is a lot of innovative progress in the metal forming community and we need to maintain our place at the cutting edge of this innovation.’”

Approach Stamping Problems Like a Crime Scene Investigator
Prime-time television-viewing options inundate us with police-procedural dramas like CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, and NCIS, among dozens more. In them, we see analysts combing through the area surrounding a mishap and well-meaning people traipsing through crime scenes inadvertently contaminating evidence.
When problems occur in our stamping plants, we should follow similar investigative procedures, while working to maintain the integrity of the data. The first step television teaches us: Define and describe the victim. While a crime-drama detective may start by looking at the information contained on the crime victim’s driver’s license, we can look at the certified sheet metal properties that accompany each material shipment.
