November Technology Orders Boomed, Due in Large Part to Reshoring
Orders of manufacturing technology surpassed $650 million in November 2021, according to the latest U.S. Manufacturing Technology Orders Report published by AMT–The Association For Manufacturing Technology, the second highest monthly total and only the fifth time monthly orders have exceeded $600 million since the beginning of the program in 1998. The value of orders climbed nearly 14 percent from October 2021 and more than doubled the value of orders received in November 2020. The year-to-date total topped $5.3 billion, some $340 million short of becoming the best year in the history of the program.

2022: Growth Opportunities Ahead for Metal Formers
…provided they successfully clear some looming hurdles. The end-of-year Institute of Supply Management (ISM) survey of executives finds a generally optimistic outlook in revenue and capital expenditures amongst manufacturing companies for the first half of 2022, with continued expansion through the second half, though at slightly lower rates. Of course, hurdles lie in the path to profitability, and we know them all too well. Chief among them: labor shortages and supply-chain disruption. Read on as MetalForming analyzes auto, aerospace and other markets.

Tariff Rate Quotas Now in Effect
The Biden administration’s agreement with the 27-member European Union that replaced the Section 232 tariffs on steel and aluminum imports with tariff rate quotas (TRQ) took effect on January 1, 2022. A TRQ means that zero tariffs will be applied until the quota for the particular steel or aluminum product outlined in the agreement is reached; then the 10-percent tariff for aluminum and 25-percent tariff for steel are applied for the remainder of that quota period (quarterly for steel and annually for aluminum).
