January Manufacturing Sustains Growth, Supply Difficulties Continue
The U.S. manufacturing sector continued growing for an eighth straight month in January as the Institute for Supply Management’s Purchasing Manager’s Index for sector growth registered 58.7 percent. The overall economy also grew, sustaining a parallel streak with manufacturing. But despite the positive news for manufacturing production, prices and employment, supplier deliveries remain a sore spot.

What's in Store for Metal Formers?
Economic outlooks issued by many experts late in 2020 project a strong V-shaped recovery from the pandemic-affected global economy, albeit somewhat delayed until the second and third quarters of 2021. So, while we’re not out of the woods yet, it certainly looks like growth and a return to prosperity looms on the horizon—for those companies equipped to meet increased demand, whether through investments in labor and/or new metal forming technology, including automation.

MetalForming magazine breaks down the outlook for a handful of key sectors for metal formers and fabricators.

OSHA Issues Stronger Workplace Guidance on Coronavirus
On January 29, OSHA issued new guidance to help employers and workers implement a COVID-19 protection program and better identify risks that could lead to exposure and contraction. While OSHA recognizes in the guidance that the contents are “not a standard or regulation” and the document “creates no new legal obligations,” the agency also expressly reminds employers that they are obligated to comply, not only with specific OSHA standards, but also with the Occupational Safety and Health Act’s “General Duty Clause.”

The guidance recommends several elements in a prevention program:
  • Conducting a hazard assessment
  • Identifying control measures to limit the spread of the virus including physical barriers and face coverings over the nose and mouth
  • Adopting policies for employee absences that don’t punish workers as a way to encourage potentially infected workers to remain home
  • Ensuring that coronavirus policies and procedures are communicated to both English and non-English speaking workers
  • Implementing protections from retaliation for workers who raise coronavirus-related concerns.
Keep in mind that President Biden’s executive order still calls on OSHA to develop a full Emergency Temporary Standard by March 15 if OSHA deems it necessary.

Troubleshooting Sheet Metal Forming Problems, Part 1: The Sheet Metal
In his Science of Forming column, Daniel Schaeffler takes on troubleshooting of forming problems, with a focus on the material itself.

“After a part has been in routine production for some time, we can trace most subsequent forming problems back to some process variable different from what had been used in the past,” he writes. “Dozens of possible parameters may have changed, but the more common ones include the sheet metal composition and mechanical properties, the die, the lubricant, and the press.”
