RIP Stu: The Industry Suffers a Great Loss
Stuart Keeler authored the Science of Forming column for MetalForming magazine for nearly 20 years, starting with the January 1999 issue. A world-renowned expert in metal forming and a passionate educator who conducted a bevy of technical seminars for PMA going back dozens of years, Dr. Keeler began his career at the Massachusetts Institute Technology, earning a doctorate in Mechanical Metallurgy. Stu’s doctoral research on sheet metal forming limits led to his development of the Forming Limit Diagram, work that led to many in the industry endearingly referring to Stu as “the father of metal forming.” Sadly, Stu passed away on May 14. –Brad Kuvin, Publisher/Editorial Director, MetalForming

Department of Energy Announces $89 Million for Innovative Manufacturing Technologies
United States Department of Energy (DOE) Secretary Rick Perry has announced $89 million to support innovative, advanced manufacturing research and development projects. This DOE funding-opportunity announcement targets key DOE priorities such as domestic manufacturing for energy storage. America’s manufacturing sector, which has created almost 500,000 jobs since 2017 and more than 250,000 jobs in the last year alone, also uses 25 percent of the nation’s energy.

Stepping Toward the Future
As consumer demand for customized products, greater flexibility and shorter lead times ramps up, to remain competitive manufacturers must adapt and get on board with Industry 4.0 and the Internet of Things.

Plan Now: Conferences Explore Additive Manufacturing
As more metalformers and fabricators test the waters, with some going all-in, on additive manufacturing (AM) for metal and nonmetal part, tool and workholding applications, MetalFormings sister publication, 3D Metal Printing magazine, offers info-packed conferences exploring AM and its capabilities. Next up: the Mexico Additive Manufacturing and 3D Printing Conference, June 12-13 in Monterrey, Mexico.

Our main U.S.-based conference, the 3D Metal Printing Experience and Tech Tour, August 6-7 in Novi, MI, enables attendees to interact with industry experts, learn about the latest technology developments and hear case-study applications. They also will participate in exclusive plant tours of Ford’s Advanced Manufacturing Center and Linear AMS, witnessing 3D metal printing machines in action.
