When Houston, TX-based Diverse Metal Products inherited a die used to emboss plate-style heat-exchanger plates for a U.S. Nuclear Navy project, a new, custom hydraulic press became a necessity. In September 2020, the new press—packing 2500 tons of forming capacity—hit the floor running.
The Women in Manufacturing Association (WiM) will recognize Precision Metalforming Association (PMA) President Emeritus Bill Gaskin during its Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony and Gala on October 6. Gaskin will be the first recipient of WiM’s newly created William E. Gaskin Manufacturing Ally Award, presented to an individual who has significantly supported the advancement of women within his/her company and industry, and inspired others to champion women in the industry.
During his career, Gaskin strongly advocated for women and supported the
creation of the PMA Women in Metalforming group, which later
transformed into WiM.

ANSI B11.20-2017, “Safety Requirements for the Integration of Machinery into a System,” as detailed by the B11 standards organization, specifies the safety requirements for the design, construction, setup, operation and maintenance (including installation, dismantling and transport) of integrated manufacturing systems.
The revised publication (in 2017; the first revision of this document
was released in 1991) resulted from an extensive overhaul of the
previously published document and is an essential standard for all metal
formers to obtain and use in their safety-planning activities.
Some of the changes to the standard, as typical in any update of an ANSI standard, relate to updated terminology designed to be more in line with global standards. One example that end-users should be familiar with: “Safeguarding” now is referred to as “risk-reduction measures/engineering controls.” Also, the term “awareness devices” has been replaced by “awareness means.”
LSP MiniCoater is a unique way to roller-apply lubricant to metal coil
stock. You can precisely control application with the LSP Controller or
any existing PLC. Job changes are easy with ability to change or
replace rollers in less than a minute, and multiple roller materials are

MetalForming chats with Steve Peplin, CEO of Talan Products, in the latest installment of the magazine’s monthly Q&A sessions with executives at metal stamping and fabricating companies.
Cleveland, OH-based Talan Products “has been growing like a weed,” says Peplin, “at about 18 percent CAGR over the last 35 yr. And, our sales/employee ratio is high, three to four times that of the average metal former.”
Talan Products, as Peplin notes in describing the company’s success, grades well on numerous industry benchmarks.
“We invest three times the industry norm on workforce development, including expansive adoption of the PMA METALFORM EDU virtual learning platform,” he tells Brad Kuvin, MetalForming’s editorial director. “And, our sales/employee ratio is very high, three times what the average metal former achieves. Keeping direct labor costs low allows us to compete, even with low-cost countries.”

Sounds quite easy, doesn’t it? After all, papers from the 1980s describe predicting springback using finite-element analysis (FEA), and many commercially available software packages offer die designers easy access to FEA capabilities. Yet with all of these advancements, we still hear of shops machining die surfaces two or more times. What goes wrong?
