Control Upgrade the Fountain of Youth for 15-yr.-Old Press
Press-operator efficiency and job satisfaction are on the rise at automotive-parts supplier Ernst Metal Technologies, resulting from a press-line rehab that saw the replacement of aging motors, drives and other electronic components with new state-of-the-art components. And, the huge, new 19-in. HMI display screen on the press control doesn’t hurt either.

“The ongoing issues with the outdated control on this press were impacting overall equipment effectiveness,” shares company vice president and sales manager Tuncay Onursal.  “Lack of available spare electronic components for the press and control system became a significant issue, and we wanted to provide our operators and maintenance team with an updated press line that would enable them to be as productive as possible.”

Analysis of Square and Rectangular Draws
In axisymmetric cup drawing, uniform forces act around the perimeter of the blank edge. In contrast, square and rectangular shape draws, also called box draws, experience varying metal flow rates at different locations around the blank perimeter. To prevent wrinkling and tearing, the rate of metal flow into the die cavity must be controlled.
