3D Metal Printing magazine was out in full force covering RAPID + TCT, the additive manufacturing (AM) industry's largest North American event held last month in Detroit, MI. Of course, new metal-printing technology was on full display, but so, too, did new materials make a splash, along with simulation and quality control software. 3DMP will offer a comprehensive recap in our Summer 2019 issue, due out in July. Vacuum Heat Treating Services for 3D Metal Printing Technologies
Solar Atmospheres provides commercial vacuum heat treating services for 3D metal printing technologies. At RAPID + TCT, Velo3D highlighted its Sapphire laser fusion metal AM system, reportedly offering the unique ability to print low angles and overhangs below 10 deg., as well as large diameters and inner tubes to 40 mm without the need for supports. Check out this demonstration.

Chris Larmour, CEO of Orbex, reveals Europe's most modern, environmentally friendly and reusable launch vehicle. Of partnering with SLM Solutions to 3D print the world's largest single-piece rocket engine Larmour stated, "This allows us to build reliably in a repeatable manner at a reduced cost."

Israeli machining company Sharon Tuvia branched out into AM nearly a decade ago, and continues to add new technology to meet aerospace needs and explore new markets.

Markforged Unveils AI-Powered Platform for Factory Fixes
At RAPID + TCT, Markforged announced Blacksmith—reportedly the first artificial intelligence (AI)-powered software that enables manufacturing machines to adjust programming automatically to ensure every part meets customer specs. Starting with Markforged's Metal X and X7 3D printers, Blacksmith creates a continuous feedback loop to make 3D printed parts more accurately. Markforged officials cite Blacksmith as a great example of adaptive manufacturing.

Itamco Wins Air Force Contract for 3D Printed Runway Mats
Indiana Technology and Manufacturing Companies (Itamco), Plymouth, MI, has announced a contract with the U.S. Air Force to develop 3D printed runway mats, a critical component of expeditionary airfields. Such portable airfields are constructed, used and broken down after a mission, and moved to another site for re-use. The mats must be easy to install and store, yet capable of withstanding the stresses of repeated take-offs and landings of aircraft and the impact from arresting hooks. Prototypes made on Itamco's EOS M290 3D printer are made from Type 316L stainless steel powder.
