New and Improved Lattice Structures |
A new class of 3D printed lattice structures designed by researchers at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory reportedly combine light weight and high stiffness,
and can be applied using metal and nonmetal materials. Additionally,
one of the new structures displays perfectly uniform response to forces
in all directions, the researchers report, while noting that the new
class of structures were found to outperform the octet truss, a standard
geometric lattice pattern employed in AM. |

Transforming for Tomorrow—With Caution |
While
transformation or structural change certainly is not new to
manufacturing, the latest forces at work appear to be ushering in
transformation at an all-time quick pace. Industry 4.0 and its digital
manufacturing and AM components, along with advanced quality-assurance
programs built on computer vision and maintenance programs built on
Internet of Things applications, are just a few examples of this
transformation.
How Sustainable Is 3D Printing? AM has a role to play in meeting a number of global challenges. Let’s look at just one, sustainability, and see where AM helps. Two facts immediately come to mind: AM reduces material waste as compared to traditional manufacturing processes, and print on demand reduces the need for transportation and related infrastructure. |

Coming in the Fall 2019 Issue |
More
lasers in a 3D metal printing setup can increase processing speed, but
also can introduce complications distinct from those of printing with a
single laser. These include scan-field alignment, the thermal state of
the AM system, laser utilization and soot management.
RPG Industries, a Tier One to the aerospace and automotive industries as
well as several others, recently completed installation of its new
Markforged Metal X system for 3D printing metal parts. Learn how the
Tipp City, OH-based provider of precision parts uses 3D technology to
exceed customer requirements. |
