Araqev Commercializes Purdue-Developed AM Quality-Control Software |
A
Purdue University-related company, Araqev, has commercialized
quality-control software designed to benefit sectors such as aerospace,
automotive, consumer products, medical devices and national defense that
employ additive manufacturing (AM) technologies.
The software reportedly helps end users print products in only a few
design iterations, leading to less scrap material and machining time,
eliminating the frustrations with 3D printing, and improving
satisfaction with the final printed products. Araqev's algorithms also
enable the transfer of knowledge encoded via machine-learning (ML)
models across different materials, printers and shapes in an AM system. |

Vacuum Heat Treating 3D Metal Printed Components |
Since
3D printing builds to near net or finished dimensions, vacuum heat
treating is an absolute necessity. Vacuum levels that approach 1 X 10-6
Torr produce clean and oxide free surface conditions that are
metallurgically stable. Critical temperature control is also a must to
avoid cracking and producing a strong and ductile part. |

JIT Large-Part Production Brings Refinery Back Online On Schedule |
|

Lincoln
Electric used its large-scale, metal-AM process to deliver just-in-time
parts to Chevron USA, Inc., helping to bring a Chevron refinery back
online according to schedule.
“Our planned maintenance schedule was in jeopardy due to current supply-chain issues,” says Robert Rettew, Chevron materials technology engineer. “We realized that this supply crunch could impact operations and our bottom line. We worked with Lincoln Electric to explore how parts could be created faster so that we could resume operations as planned.” |

Automation Takes the Hurt Out of Post-Processing
Post-processing has been labeled the necessary evil of AM.
Unquestionably of utmost importance in the production cycle,
post-processing nonetheless can drop challenges and roadblocks galore in
time, manpower and costs. |
