United Parcel Service (UPS), Atlanta, GA, recently led a $48-million series B funding round for 3D printing startup Fast Radius, Chicago, IL. UPS has been working with Fast Radius since early 2016 to link the companies' resources, having participated in two previous rounds of funding for Fast Radius via the UPS Strategic Enterprise Fund.
In 2018, Praxair Surface Technologies'TruForm™Advance Teamcreated over 200 new custom alloys for customer applications in our TruForm Center for AM Advancement. Visit us in booth #1152, May 21-23, and discover the latest AM metal powder trends.
Swarm robots for AM, attacking from multiple axes and focusing on specific, complex tasks, can be used as timesaving devices to build structures. Research at MIT has yielded one example, the FiberBots platform, shown in the video. Also, the University of Arkansas AM Lab, founded and directed by Additive Manufacturing Users Group (AMUG) 2019 Randy Stevens Scholarship winner Dr. Wenchao Zhou, swarms 3D printing and assembly. Zhou's company, Ambots Inc., seeks to commercialize the patent-pending technology. Currently, swarm-AM technology focuses on nonmetal challenges such as working in controlled atmospheres. For now, the tricky nature of printing metals and other factors make swarm metal printing an extremely difficult proposition.
Chris Larmour, CEO of Orbex, reveals Europe's most modern, environmentally friendly and reusable launch vehicle. Of partnering with SLM Solutions to 3D print the world's largest single-piece rocket engine Larmour stated, "This allows us to build reliably in a repeatable manner at a reduced cost."
Papers are invited for the Fourth ASTM Symposium on Structural Integrity of AM Materials and Parts, Oct. 8-10 in Washington, D.C. The event provides a forum for the exchange of ideas regarding the structural integrity of material and components fabricated using AM, with a focus on the lack of industry standards, design principles, as well as qualification and certification criteria.
Centorr Vacuum Industries is a manufacturer of high performance vacuum debind and sintering furnaces for the 3D Additive Manufacturing furnace market, as well as units for Metal and Ceramic Injection Molding. Available with either metal or graphite hot zones, these units can process all of the most common metals including Fe-Ni, 316-L, 17-4PH, and Inconel powders and feedstocks as well as a variety of other materials including titanium, tungsten carbide, tool steels, and superalloys. The new Sintervac AM™ operates at pressures of 0-15 torr as well as positive pressures of argon, nitrogen, or forming gas for increased flexibility of processing binder-jetted parts, while the Workhorse AM™ is used for the heat treat, annealing, and tempering of laser-sintered parts.
