NASA's SLS Rocket Comes Together
See how the forward join, or upper part, of the core stage was assembled for NASA's Space Launch System (SLS) for missions to the moon and Mars. The forward join connects three structures: the liquid oxygen tank, intertank and forward skirt, and is the first of three major assembly jobs required by NASA and Boeing, the SLS prime contractor. When completed, the 70-metric ton rocket will stand 321-ft. tall, provide 8.4 million lb. of thrust at liftoff, weigh 5.5 million lb. and carry 154,000 lb. of payload.
Assembly takes place at NASA's Michoud Assembly Facility in New Orleans.

Unique IoT Event
IoT for Manufacturers: Software, Sensors and Controls, Marriott Downtown at Key Center, June 24-25 in Cleveland, OH, is a one-of-a-kind event, powered by MetalForming magazine, and promises to educate floor supervisors, manufacturing engineers and managers, IT directors, and others working in small to midsized metal forming and fabricating plants on the coming wave of digital manufacturing and plant-floor connectivity. Attendees will learn from expert speakers on ERP/MRP software, sensors and machine controls, while benefitting from myriad case studies describing how IoT improves OEE and drives quality and productivity improvements.
Hot Off the Press
Plan Now: Conferences Explore Additive Manufacturing
As more metalformers and fabricators test the waters, with some going all-in, on additive manufacturing (AM) for metal and nonmetal part, tool and workholding applications, MetalForming's sister publication, 3D Metal Printing magazine, offers info-packed conferences exploring AM and its capabilities. Next up: 3D Metal Printing Experience and Tech Tour, August 6-7 in Novi, MI. This event enables attendees to interact with industry experts, learn about the latest technology developments and hear case-study applications. They also will participate in exclusive plant tours of Ford's Advanced Manufacturing Center and Linear AMS, witnessing 3D metal printing machines in action.
