Steel Making Gains in Battery Electric Vehicle Design and Production

Batteries and their necessary protection can add approximately 1500 lb. to the weight of a vehicle, a limiting factor in adoption of battery electric vehicles (BEVs), according to Bala Krishnan, director of automotive product applications for ArcelorMittal,
To the rescue: advanced high strength steel (AHSS). 

“AHSS grades offer greater strength per unit density than competing materials, providing an advantage to BEVs,” Krishnan explains in an ArcelorMittal blog post. “The unmatched strength of steel not only enhances intrusion resistance, but the thinner, stronger steel allows for more space to accommodate larger batteries, increasing driving range.”
