Lightweighting with AHSS Is Green Solution, Says SRI Study

The Steel Recycling Institute (SRI), Southfield, MI, a business unit of the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI), has released a peer-reviewed study on material-production emissions. The study, "Life Cycle Greenhouse Gas and Energy Study of Automotive Lightweighting," examines the environmental impact of vehicle lightweighting using advanced high-strength steel (AHSS) compared with aluminum. It concludes that AHSS-intensive vehicles had lower or equivalent lifecycle emissions than aluminum-intensive vehicles for every class of vehicles tested.

"As driving emissions decrease to meet regulations, production emissions become an even more significant component of a vehicle's full environmental footprint," says Jody Hall, vice president, automotive market, Steel Market Development Institute, also a business unit of AISI. "If material-production-phase emissions continue to be overlooked, negative effects on the environment will begin before the vehicle is ever driven. Steel offers the best solution for the environment, the best performance and cost-effective solution for automakers, and ultimately the best value for consumers."

High School Program Manufactures Alternative to College

Smalley Steel Ring Co., Lake Zurich, IL, maker of precision retainer rings, has collaborated with its local school district to create the Manufacturing and Technology program (MAT) for Lake Zurich High School students interested in manufacturing careers.

Students enrolled in the new program can earn certifications from the National Institute for Metalworking Skills (NIMS) and work as paid interns during their senior years. Students also can be CNC-certified for lathe and millwork, earn a Technology and Manufacturing Association certificate of completion and receive instruction in pre-manufacturing math and science.

"The district believes that by offering this pathway, we are creating an opportunity for students to leap into a rewarding career upon graduation," says Beth Slaughter, development coordinator for the school district.
