DAY TWO: NASCAR Keynote, Panel on Industry Issues and Advanced Technologies
Expect a lot of traffic on Day Two at FABTECH, with plenty of opportunities to network and learn from attendees exhibitors and speakers. Speaking of speakers, the day gets off to a fast start with an 8:30 a.m. keynote by auto-racing icon Kyle Petty. Considered one of the most popular personalities in all of sports, Petty will take the stage to relate his journey through life as a businessman, philanthropist and one of NASCAR’s most respected drivers. His talk explores striving for excellence, living up to promises, teamwork, community and commitment to family.

At 12:30 p.m., an expert panel convenes to present a state of the industry. Industry experts will discuss the issues such as steel and commodity prices in general, chronic labor shortages, and global trade.

In the Metalform technology area, watch the micron accuracy and speed of servo-press technology in action in a high-speed robot-transfer line. Digital technology links the entire production cell for remote monitoring. On the fabricating front, Komatsu displays the new TLH Series high-speed laser-cutting system. The 3D, five-axis, cantilever-design machine features a rapid feed rate of nearly 4000 in/min., and 540 deg./sec.

Conference Reports
The FABTECH 2018 Conference Program’s Stamping sessions enable attendees to gain knowledge and remain proactive in key metalforming areas.

Day Two sessions, beginning at 8 a.m., hone in on sensor technology and advanced high-strength steels (AHSS), with George Keremedjiev from Tecknow Education Services presenting on how to test sensors for shop-floor applications, followed by three AHSS presentations. Speaking on AHSS properties, Peter Ulintz from PMA; on formability challenges, Hunter Coe and Tom Brockie, Coe Press Equipment; and on tooling optimization, Wilson Tool International’s Jeremy Edson.

The morning’s second-half sessions, beginning at 10:30 a.m., will look at pressroom technology and how to solve progressive-die problems. Speaking on the former, EWI’s Hyunok Kim and Balluff’s Will Healy III, and on the latter, PMA’s Peter Ulintz.

Afternoon sessions start at 1:30 p.m. with a presentation by Tecknow’s George Keremedjiev on low-cost approaches to die protection, followed by a session led by Meco’s Jeff Fredline on preventive maintenance in the pressroom and its relationship to throughput.
