SMMs Being Pushed to Innovate
As small to mid-sized manufacturers (SMMs) seek that often-elusive competitive edge, “status quo is no longer an option,” writes Elliot Ginsberg for the Hartford Business Journal. Ginsberg is president and CEO of the Connecticut Center for Advanced Technology.

“The usual strategy of budget tightening, cutting expenses, and operating month-to-month or quarter-to-quarter to sustain current profit levels is at the tipping point,” Ginsberg stresses.

Alternatively, Ginsberg offers timely and critical advice for SMMs on where changes must be made. And, he describes several public-policy changes--regionally and nationally—needed to help SMMs “sustain profitability without incurring burdensome capital debt or operating expenses.”

> How Regulations Can Strangle Manufacturing
Less-regulated industries perform better—that’s the theme of this article that holds up the state of Arkansas as a perfect example of how regulations can stymie manufacturing growth. The state’s manufacturers have a dismal record of improving worker productivity, which relates directly to excessive regulation, says the article’s author. Only two states, we learn—Mississippi and Alabama—are more burdensome to manufacturers than Arkansas.

The article includes an eye-opening infographic titled, “Labor Productivity Growth in Least Regulated and Most Regulated Industries.”

> Countdown to the Fifth Annual Women in Manufacturing SUMMITT
With just a couple weeks to go until the fifth annual Women in Manufacturing (WiM) SUMMIT, final preparations are being made for the two-day event in Minneapolis, MN, Sept. 23-25. Hundreds of women professionals in the manufacturing industry will attend the event, to take in educational and professional-development sessions and participate in plant tours and networking sessions.

“The WiM SUMMIT is an opportunity for talented women in manufacturing companies to share insights and ideas both for growth as professionals and growth as an industry,” says Dr. Cynthia Arnold, senior vice president and chief technology officer at Valspar Corp. and a speaker at this year’s WiM SUMMIT. Arnold presentation, “Leading an Innovative Organization,” will explore how traditional manufacturing companies can develop innovative approaches, teams and culture.”

Registration for WiM SUMMIT 2015 is still open on the WiM website and plant-tour selection is part of the SUMMIT registration.

Stock Lubrication
Cleans Up Its Act

Unist Stock lubrication can be the ugly side of metal forming with messy presses and sloppy, wet floors. Luckily, those days are over. Uni-Roller systems from Unist use patented, internally-fed rollers to deliver smooth and consistent lube to one or both sides of the stock with no over-application or mess.
