At a press conference held earlier this week, Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour announced more details about the new Center for Manufacturing Excellence planned for the University of Mississippi. The $22 million center, funded in 2007 as part of a package developed to help lure Toyota to build its new plant in Mississippi, will teach principles of lean manufacturing, total quality management and just-in-time inventory delivery. Four bachelor’s degree programs will be offered--two business-related and two engineering-related—all with a manufacturing emphasis.
