European contract assembler Magna Steyr is prowling the United States and Canada in the hopes of soon assembling vehicles here, once it can land a contract with an automaker, according to www.TheCarConnection.com. Its preliminary plans will require customer orders of around 150,000 units. Its Austrian plant assembles for DaimlerChrysler, BMW and GM—volume in 2004 more than doubled, to nearly 226,000 units. The firm’s engineering center in Rochester Hills, MI, handles work for the Big Three and some European and Asian carmakers.
