Report Details Formability of High-Strength Steels

Thursday, April 29, 2004

Just released is a 174-page report characterizing the formability of several high-strength steels. The report, resulting from a collaborative effort of the American Iron and Steel Institute and the Department of Energy, is available through www.autosteel.org. Automotive engineers will find the results useful in understanding high-strength-steel behavior under press-forming conditions, according to participants in the research. Steels included in the study included drawing-quality and deep-drawing-quality steels, conventional high-strength steels, advanced high-strengths steels such as dual-phase and TRIP, and ultra-high-strength steels. These types of steels, according to AISI officials, offer opportunities to reduce mass and increase fuel efficiency in automobiles while improving safety and structural performance--without adding to vehicle cost.
