May Steel Imports Steady, Prices Falling

Based on preliminary Census Bureau data, the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) reports that the United States imported 1.9 million net tons of steel in May, an increase of 2.9 percent over April . Through May, total steel imports are 10.1-million net tons, down 16.3 percent as compared to the same period last year. The May spot price for hot-rolled sheet dropped to $260 from a peak of $400 in July 2002, according to AISI, citing a report in Purchasing Magazine. The May spot price, reports AISI, is down 23 percent from the 21-year average of $339. The May spot price for cold-rolled sheet dropped to $380from a peak of $525 in July 2002, and is down 15 percent from the 21-year average of $449.
