Steel-Part Manufacturers See Improvement in 2003

The nation’s steel-parts manufacturers have a hopeful economic outlook for the new year, according to the Precision Metalforming Association (PMA) Business Conditions Report. As of December 1, 2002, 28 percent of survey respondents predict an increase in general economic activity, up from 20 percent the month prior. Only 15 percent expect a downward trend, a 17-percent decrease from November. Fifty-seven percent expect conditions to remain the same. The December survey marks the first time in nearly six months that manufacturers have offered such promise for the industry, according to PMA officials. Also, 32 percent of respondents predict an increase in orders, up from 26 percent in November, while 18 percent expect a decrease, In November, 34 percent forecasted a decrease.
