Domestic Steel Shipments, Prices Drop in December

Monday, February 18, 2002

Domestic steel-mill shipments totaled 99,448,000 net tons in 2001, down 8.8 percent from 2000, according to the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI). Through December 2001, the capability-utilization rate was 75.6 percent, down from 84.4 percent in 2000. For December alone, mills shipped 6,872,000 net tons, a decrease of 9.1 percent as compared to December 2000 shipments. U.S. prices for hot- and cold-rolled sheet in December 2001 were down 11 and 14 percent, respectively, as compared to December 2000. AISI cited steel imports as the cause for slumping shipments and depressed prices. For more data, visit www.steel.org.
