Despite increases in monthly shipments, the trend continues to point downward for the North American steel tubular industry, according to statistics supplied by the Steel Tube Institute of North America. Shipments of mechanical tube rose 10-12 percent in October as compared to September numbers, but trailed October 2000 shipments by 8-10 percent. Shipments thus far in 2001 trails 2000 same-period levels by 17-19 percent. Hollow structural tube shipments rose 10-12 percent in October, but trail October 2000 shipments by 3-5 percent. Year-to-date volume is 9-11 percent behind 2000 levels. Shipments of stainless tubular products increased 4-6 percent in October, but decreased 3-5 percent as compared to last October. Through 10 months, such shipments are 12-14 percent lower than last year. Standard-pipe shipments (4 in. and under) gained 1-3 percent over September and trailed October 2000 shipments by 4-6 percent. Year-to-date, shipments are down 8-10 percent.
