Manufacturing's Share of U.S. Economy Drops

Manufacturing made up 11 percent of gross domestic product in the second quarter, the smallest share since 1947, according to a United States Department of Commerce report. While manufacturing has added about half a million workers on the whole since the last presidential election, the report notes that “states such as Pennsylvania and Wisconsin are now losing factory jobs amid a persistent trade war with China while protectionist policies have disturbed companies’ supply chains, stymied investment and slowed hiring.”
