Metal 3D-Printed Frame Propels Cyclist to Speed Record

With a big assist from an M 400 additive manufacturing (AM) machine from EOS, Italian cyclist Filippo Ganna this past October set a new 1-hr. cycling record at the Tissot Velodrome in Grenchen, Switzerland. Ganna reached 56.792 km, 1.244 km farther than the previous record, set in 1996.
His record breaking bike, a custom Bolide F HR 3D from Pinarello, features a Scalmalloy (aluminum-alloy) frame printed on the EOS M 400. All past record-breaking rides have been on carbon-fiber frames, making this mark a testament to the capabilities offered by metal AM, including the ability to produce a frame highly customized to the rider. In this case, the custom sizing provided less frame drag, contributing to performance.
