Video: Swarm Robots for Additive Manufacturing Gaining Traction
April 30, 2019Swarm-AM robots, attacking from multiple axes and focusing on specific, complex tasks, can be used as a time-saving device to build structures. Research at MIT has yielded one example, the FiberBots platform, shown in this video. Additive Manufacturing Users Group (AMUG) 2019 Randy Stevens Scholarship winner Dr. Wenchao Zhou, swarms 3D printing and assembly. Zhou’s company, Ambots Inc., seeks to commercialize the patent-pending technology. Currently, swarm-AM technology focuses on nonmetal challenges such as working in controlled atmospheres. For now, the tricky nature of printing metals and other factors make swarm metal printing an extremely difficult proposition.
