3D Printed Brake Parts Could Save Ford $2 Million

The Ford Motor Co., which opened its $45-million Advanced Manufacturing Center late last year in Redford, MI, continues to accelerate its AM efforts. This includes printing of brake parts, which could be a money-saver for the automaker.

"Additive manufacturing is a huge priority," says Michael Mikula, global chief engineer, manufacturing system and infrastructure. "It's a legitimate alternative today for the right parts.” Such parts include two 3D-printed brake parts for Ford’s upcoming Mustang Shelby GT500. One undisclosed use of that technology reportedly could save the automaker more than $2 million. 

"Our goal is to create the factory of tomorrow, today," Mikula says. "The business needs it, the market requires it and consumers will benefit from it."
