“We typically fineblank a variety of
steel grades, including high-strength low-alloy steels,” says Luppis. “Most recently, we’ve been required to fine- blank 8-mm-thick AISI grade 4140 steel (655-MPa tensile strength, 415-MPa yield), a cold-rolled high-tensile alloy (0.75-1.00 Mn, 0.80-1.1 Cr, 0.38-0.43 C). The robustness of the new coil line really proves itself with this material.”
“We needed a straightener that was strong, robust and reliable,” adds Petrazzini. “We must maintain stable consistent production throughput, avoiding unscheduled downtime. The new equipment fits the bill, with overall stiffness of the machine being the critical criteria. When evaluating the machine design, we appreciated that key com- ponents were oversized to ensure stable and consistent performance.”
In addition to the power straight- ener (127 by 610 mm), the equipment setup includes a threading table (610 by 460 mm), for hands-free threading;
and a 7000-kg-capacity by 610-mm coil reel with multiple hydraulic hold- downs and motorized end wheels for coil containment.
“We can use the line to process high- strength steels 620-MPa yield at thick- nesses from 3 to 12 mm,” adds Luppis, “depending on the width of the material. It can achieve a payoff rate to 80 ft./min.”
A Business Builder
While braking-system components represent 90 percent of Util’s business, the firm seeks to diversify into different products and markets, and to open up new opportunities, Luppis and Petrazz- ini tell MetalForming. “There are thou- sands of components made from fineblanking,” Luppis says.
“This specialized process has replaced machining operations in numerous cases,” he continues. “For us, with the ability to fineblank material to 12 mm thick, we expect to be able to start to open up new opportunities very quickly.” MF
