ArcelorMittal USA’s Rippey Named Steel Distributors’ 2014 Steel Man of the Year
Talan Products, Cleveland, OH, a full-service metal-stamp- ing company and manufactur- er of tooling and engineered parts, has received a 2015 Evolution of Manufacturing Award presented by Smart Business magazine. Talan (www.talanproducts.com) was honored for its achievements in manufacturing, including its commitment to safety and efficiency in its manufacturing processes. The company’s incident rate decreased from nearly 20 in 2006 to zero in 2014. Over the same span, its DART rate (days away, restric- tions, transfers) decreased from 10 to zero. Talan has maintained a DART rate of zero since 2013.
Talan was among 10 com- panies honored at the 2015 Evolution of Manufacturing Conference Feb. 19 at the Advanced Technology Training Center on the Metro Campus of Cuyahoga Community College.
The Association of Steel Distributors (ASD) announced Michael G. Rippey, chairman of ArcelorMittal USA, Chicago, IL, as the 2014 recipient of its Steel Man of the Year award. The annual ASD award recog- nizes one individual who embodies leadership, dedica- tion, service and excellence in the steel industry. Rippey will be officially recognized at a black-tie event during the 2015 ASD Spring Convention, April 23-25, in Indian Wells, CA.

 Rippey leads ArcelorMittal USA’s flat carbon operations, comprising 17 facilities in nine states and including mines, integrated steelmak- ing facilities and finishing mills capable of producing light flat-rolled and plate products. The company’s U.S. flat carbon operations employs more than 16,000 people. Rippey also has served as president and chief executive officer of ArcelorMittal USA from 2006 to 2014.
Talan’s commitment to effi- ciency is demonstrated in its investment in new equipment. The company purchased a remanufactured 600-ton Min- ster Hevi-Stamper press, to go online in the spring. The press will be paired with a new deburring machine capable of handling stampings to 14 in. dia. Both new machines will be installed as part of a new production line that will allow Talan to bring previously out- sourced work inhouse.
Automatic Feed Co., Napoleon, OH, has launched its redesigned website, www.automaticfeed.com, which adapts to computer, tablet and mobile-phone screen sizes, making it simple to use on any device. The new site provides an overview of the company’s coil-handling offerings, including progressive-die, cut-to-length and blanking lines; stackers; oscillating shears; levelers and more. The site includes a Serv- ice section where users can make service requests via an automated form.

David J. Landon has been named as the 2015 presi- dent and chair of the board of the 70,000 member Amer- ican Welding Society (AWS), headquartered in Miami, FL. Landon has been an active member of AWS (www.aws.org) for more than 30 years and served as its vice president from 2012-2014. He has been a contributing member to many technical commit- tees and won several AWS awards, including the District 16 Dalton E. Hamilton Memorial Certified Welding Inspector of the Year award and numerous meritorious awards. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in welding engineering from LeTourneau University in Longview, TX.
