The Center for Automotive Research (CAR) has received a $175,000 grant from Alcoa Foundation to support CAR’s research into technologies for the lightweighting of vehicles. The grant also will support an effort by internship students to collect manufacturing case- study data.

A research project launched in March 2014 to study the hydroforming of laser-brazed tailored steel and aluminum tubes has garnered the financial backing of John- son Controls. The research team combines scientists from the Institute for Integrat- ed Production and the Hanover Laser Center. John- son Controls hopes the project can help it reduce the weight of automotive-seat backs and reduce part count.
